Anand Karaj and Gurudwara Weddings in Dubai: What to Confirm

Updated

Indian wedding celebration planning in Dubai

Confirm religious eligibility and legal registration separately

The Gurudwara decides whether it will conduct Anand Karaj; the relevant court or consulate decides the legal-registration process.

  • Tell the Gurudwara both partners’ faiths and circumstances and obtain its current requirements directly.
  • Ask the authority handling registration what certificate and supporting documents it will accept after the ceremony.

Couples planning Anand Karaj in Dubai need two clear answers: whether the Gurudwara will conduct the religious ceremony and how the marriage will be legally registered. Those are related planning tasks, but they are not the same decision.

> Last checked: 7 September 2026. This page provides general planning information, not religious or legal advice. Confirm eligibility and current documents directly with Guru Nanak Darbar Dubai and the authority handling legal registration.

Faith, not nationality, is the key religious question

It is unsafe to tell a couple that Anand Karaj is available or unavailable simply because they are Indian, non-Indian or a mixed-nationality couple. The Sikh Rehat Maryada published by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee states that persons professing faiths other than Sikh cannot be joined by Anand Karaj.

The Gurudwara conducting the ceremony decides how its religious requirements apply in practice. Couples should contact its administration openly about both partners’ faiths, background and circumstances. Wedding planners and venues should not make that eligibility decision.

Questions to ask the Gurudwara

  • Are both partners eligible for Anand Karaj under the Gurudwara’s current policy?
  • Is any orientation, declaration, counselling or prior attendance required?
  • Which passports, residence documents, photographs or marital-status records are needed?
  • What evidence is required if either partner was previously married?
  • How are the date, timing, witnesses and ceremony roles confirmed?
  • What dress, head covering, photography, music and guest-conduct rules apply?
  • Which services or meals are provided and what outside suppliers are permitted?
  • What certificate is issued after the ceremony?

Do not advertise a ceremony date until the Gurudwara confirms the booking and requirements.

Ask the relevant court, embassy or consulate how the marriage will become legally registered and what it requires from the religious ceremony. Indian citizens may also need to review the Consulate General of India marriage procedure, which includes a route for registration after a Gurudwara ceremony under its published conditions.

That consular route has its own nationality and UAE-residence requirements. A religious ceremony does not automatically prove that a couple qualifies for a consular service, and consular eligibility does not replace the Gurudwara’s religious decision.

Mixed-nationality couples should use the Indian marriage registration guide and ask how the certificate will be recognised in both home countries.

Planning the celebration respectfully

Share the confirmed ceremony rules with the planner, photographer and guests. Build time for footwear, head coverings, arrival, seating and langar. Ask before placing décor, using flash, filming sacred parts or bringing outside entertainment into religious spaces.

If a reception follows at another venue, allow realistic travel time and keep the religious ceremony separate from venue rules on music, alcohol and entertainment. Compare Dubai wedding venues only after you understand the day’s non-negotiable timings.

Wedding Champs can help coordinate the celebration and suitable suppliers. It cannot confirm religious eligibility or legal recognition.

Questions couples ask

Is Anand Karaj eligibility based on nationality?

Nationality alone is not the correct test. Sikh religious guidance and the Gurudwara’s current policy govern the ceremony, so both partners should disclose their faiths and ask the Gurudwara directly.

Does an Anand Karaj ceremony complete UAE legal registration?

Do not assume so. Ask the relevant UAE court, embassy or consulate how the marriage must be registered and what evidence it accepts from the religious ceremony.
